Rach Mieu 2 Bridge – Mekong Delta's key transport artery to open 5 months early

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has hailed the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge as the 'spine' of the Mekong Delta's transport network, with the project set to open on August 19 – five months ahead of schedule.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on August 7 inspected the construction site of the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, praising it as a landmark achievement in Vietnam’s bridge-building sector and a strategic link for the Mekong Delta’s transport network.

Accompanied by Deputy Minister of Construction Pham Minh Ha and local leaders, the Deputy PM reviewed progress on the bridge, which connects Tien Giang (now Dong Thap) and Ben Tre (now Vinh Long) provinces across the Tien River. The project, overseen by the My Thuan Project Management Unit, will be inaugurated on August 19 — five months earlier than planned.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha review progress on the main span of the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge — a key link in the Mekong Delta transport network — during their site visit on August 7.

“The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge is the "spine" of the Mekong Delta’s transport system, addressing critical connectivity issues between provinces and boosting regional economic cooperation”, Deputy PM Tran Hong Ha said, noting the use of high-quality materials and advanced engineering techniques.

According to Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha, the accelerated progress was made possible by effective coordination between project contractors and local authorities in land clearance. Once operational, the bridge is expected to ease chronic congestion on the existing Rach Mieu Bridge, particularly during peak holiday periods.

The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, part of National Highway 60, spans approximately 17.6 kilometers including approach roads, and features four lanes designed for speeds of up to 80 km/h. With an investment of over VND 5.1 trillion (USD 200 million), the cable-stayed bridge is built to withstand severe weather and support heavier traffic loads, ensuring long-term resilience.

Deputy PM Tran Hong Ha directed the Ministry of Construction to propose commendations for units and individuals who achieved outstanding results, including innovative construction solutions. He also urged continued focus on safety, quality control, and timely completion of ancillary works.

The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, a key transport link in the Mekong Delta, will be inaugurated on August 19.

The State Inspection Council will meet next week to review and approve final acceptance procedures, paving the way for the bridge’s inauguration. Once in service, Rach Mieu 2 is expected to reduce travel time, lower logistics costs, and serve as a critical economic driver for the Mekong Delta — Vietnam’s agricultural heartland.
